Sreekrishna Jayanthi

The celebration of Bhagavan Sri Krishna’s birth is known as Sri Krishna Jayanti. Sreekrishna Jayanti is also known as Krishna Janmashtami or simply Janmashtami. It is a Hindu festival which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna’s birth has been described by many hindu scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, the Mahabharata, and the Puranas. On Ashtami day, Sri Krishna was born under the ‘Rohini’ nakshatram (star). As the star “Rohini” and Ashtami may not be on the same day, the actual day of celebration may fall on two distinct days. This takes place between August and September. This year it falls on 6th September 2023. Sri Krishna is the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. Sri Krishna’s life is filled with many fatal perils, all of which he successfully overcomes. He was born in the dungeons of Kamsa, who was out to kill him at the very time of his birth. He is regarded as the most glorious manifestation of the Lord.

According to scriptures he was born on a stormy, dark night to Devaki and Vasudeva in a jail cell in Mathura, northern India. Vasudeva sent Krishna across the Yamuna River to the village of Gokul, where he was reared by his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda, as a means of defense against the evil monarch Kamsa, who planned to kill him. Sreekrishna Jayanti is a festival that is fervently and devotedly observed throughout India. Devotees fast, partake in numerous rituals, sing devotional songs (bhajans), and recite stories about Krishna’s life and teachings. Many homes and temples are decorated, and cradles are set up to represent the birth of the newborn Krishna. The “Dahi Handi” event, one of the most well-known Janmashtami traditions, involves teams of young people building human pyramids to reach and smash a clay pot filled with curd (yogurt) that is suspended at a height as a representation of Krishna’s impish disposition as a youngster who would steal butter and curd. Sreekrishna Jayanti is an all-around lively and joyful event that emphasizes Lord Krishna’s teachings, divine playfulness, and importance in Hindu mythology and spirituality.
